Sumitomo Pavilion Creator’s Voice Vol.9 Junko Tawarahara Chief Attendant
Hello from the Sumitomo Pavilion.
In this series, Sumitomo Pavilion Creators’ Voice, we introduce the stories and voices of the creative staff behind the Pavilion—those who have shaped its exhibits, architecture, and performances.
Each story is filled with passion for the Expo and the Pavilion, struggles overcome, and uncompromising dedication.
This time, our storyteller is Junko Tawarahara, Chief Attendant. As the leader of the attendant team, she is literally the “face of the Pavilion,” directly guiding and welcoming our visitors.

She has experience as a cable TV reporter and as staff for art exhibitions. Yet when asked who she really is, she smiles and replies: “Just a passing housewife”.

What brought you to the Sumitomo Pavilion project?
I was invited by the team at Clap Network to take on the role of Chief Attendant for the Sumitomo Pavilion. Having often heard stories from my family and relatives about the 1970 Osaka Expo, I already had a deep interest in Expos. When I learned about the Pavilion’s concept and vision, I immediately felt I wanted to be part of the team—and I accepted without hesitation.
But soon after, I asked myself: “Can someone like me—a housewife—really lead a team of attendants?” That anxiety stayed with me until I began studying Sumitomo’s history. I found two guiding principles: “Business, and indeed all endeavors, must be pursued sincerely and wholeheartedly,” and “An earnest amateur can surpass a professional.”
Those words gave me courage. I resolved to work wholeheartedly and ensure that every guest to the Pavilion leaves with wonderful memories.
The smiles and thanks from our visitors fuel me every day
The professional etiquette, language, and mindset we learned in training have proven invaluable in the Pavilion. No two days with our guests are ever the same, and it’s impossible to meet every single request.
Still, the smiles and words of thanks from visitors give us energy. Together with the team, we keep improving through trial and error, always aiming to respond better.

Still excited, every single day
One guest once asked me: “Don’t you get tired of seeing the same thing every day?” My answer was: “No, I never do.”
Even after more than four months since opening, I still feel excitement every day.
There have been so many memorable encounters:
– A guest who proudly told me they worked at the 1970 Osaka Expo
– Another who said this was already their tenth visit
– A visitor who was delighted when we communicated using a bit of sign language
– A couple in wheelchairs who said, “This has become a once-in-a-lifetime memory.”
– A guest who told me, “The theater’s images and performances moved me to tears.”
Each of these experiences has been unforgettable.

Every experience here is a plus in my life
Working at the Pavilion has changed me. I used to think I wasn’t good at jobs involving many people—but now I truly enjoy working with people. Everything I’ve learned here has been positive. If the opportunity arises, I’d love to continue in work that brings joy to others.
